We have learned about the latest innovations in Cobot welding, and a new machine from Lorch.

Australian Manufacturing Week (AMW) in Melbourne, May 2025, presented a smaller exhibition than in previous years, likely reflecting the economic headwinds faced by both Australia and New Zealand. There was a strong focus on machinery manufacturing, and a large number of 3D printing stands.

Welding Innovations and the Rise of Cobots

SPW/BOC showcased a wide range of welding machines and promoted new “doped” shielding gases, specifically designed for stainless steel welding. A notable trend was the increased visibility of collaborative robots (cobots), with five to six models on display, including the LORCH Cobot with Linear Slide Axis. Discussions at the event underscored the rapid global growth of the cobot market.

While Australia and New Zealand have historically lagged in technology adoption, including cobots, this is poised for a shift in Australia. A strong government push for domestic manufacturing self-sufficiency and incentives for capital investment are aimed at boosting productivity, especially in advanced manufacturing, defence, and transportation.

LORCH’s Innovative iQS Platform

LORCH unveiled their new MIG-MAG inverter platform, the iQS, designed for industrial welding. LORCH has been at the forefront of integrating digitization into their welding machines for over two decades. The IQS system continues this legacy, offering future-proof upgradability through the incorporation of AI, advanced data access and networking capabilities, and hardware enhancements for maximum flexibility and durability.

We had the opportunity to thoroughly explore this seriously smart machine. Its control panel, developed with input from a Porsche design engineer, features a clean, clear, and intuitive layout. The touch screen makes it very easy, even when wearing gloves.

The iQS builds upon the successful S series and is slated for release in Australia and New Zealand in early 2026.
